On the 28th October 1664, King Charles II made a proclamation to raise the Duke of York and Albany’s Maritime Regiment of Foot as a regiment of ‘sharp shooters’. To be deployed aboard Royal Navy vessels, to pick off enemy sailors manning heavy guns in a battle. The Royal Marines of today are the amphibious troops of the Royal Navy, acknowledged as one of the world’s elite Commando forces. The Royal Marines motto is “Per Mare Per Terram” (By Sea By Land).

The ‘Bootneck 350 Tartan’ is the only officially registered tartan in the world, to honour all Royal Marines since 1664. Created in the 350th year of The Corps, it continues to march on with love and respect for all ‘Bootnecks’ and is officially recognised by The Royal Marines.
