On 29 November 1917 an Act of Parliament establishing an Air Force and an Air Council received the Royal Assent. And the Royal Air Force came into existence on 1 April 1918. This World’s first independent Air Force was born in battle, created for a single purpose, to defend the skies over Britain! From the biplanes of the Royal Flying Corps and the Royal Naval Air Service to the fast jets of today’s Royal Air Force, the bond of man and machine in service in the skies has not changed. The RAF motto is “Per ardua ad astra” (Through adversity to the stars).

The RAF 100 Tartan is the only officially registered tartan in the world that respects and celebrates the history of the first 100 years of the Royal Air Force and to inspire the next generations to come.  It is fully endorsed by The RAF. As they enter their second century, the Royal Air Force have an exciting future and will continue to innovate, ready to meet the challenges of tomorrow for the next 100 years!
